IFHAB BEST STUDENT PAPER AWARDS
Purpose:
The IFHAB Student Paper Awards recognize and promote the scientific achievements of graduate students. Up to three awards will be granted based on the merit of research papers written by graduate students that have led to important advances in our understanding of freshwater cyanobacteria and harmful algal blooms.

Students can self-nominate one of their papers for an IFHAB Student Paper Award. To apply, submit a nomination letter (max. 1 page) and the nominated paper to ifhab.workshop@gmail.com by May 1, 2022. The nomination letter should:
Criteria:
The IFHAB Awards Committee (an interdisciplinary committee of three experts who study freshwater harmful algal blooms) will rank nominated papers using the following criteria: (i) originality of research question and rigor of study design; (ii) importance of findings to the field of study; and (iii) coherence and clarity of writing style.
Award Announcement:
Winners of the IFHAB Best Student Paper Awards will be announced at the “IFHAB Special session – Research from Temperate to Polar Regions” in May 2022. Winners will receive a cash prize, a certificate of award and be invited speak at the next IFHAB meeting in 2023. Cash prizes for IFHAB Best Student Paper Awards were made possible by SCIEX, Waters Corp. and Thermo-Fisher Scientific.

- The lead author of the paper was a graduate student (Master’s or Doctoral) enrolled at a Canadian post-secondary school when the research was conducted.
- Submissions must be a recent research article in a peer-reviewed scientific journal with a publication date after January 1, 2020.

Students can self-nominate one of their papers for an IFHAB Student Paper Award. To apply, submit a nomination letter (max. 1 page) and the nominated paper to ifhab.workshop@gmail.com by May 1, 2022. The nomination letter should:
- provide the full name, current position, affiliation, and email address of the student and the title, journal, and publication date of the nominated paper;
- indicate the program (Master’s or Doctoral) of the student at the time the research was performed for the paper
- clearly describe the novelty and impact of the published work;
- include a description of the student’s role in conceiving and carrying out the research project as well as writing the paper.
